Rowan leaves laid around a hole 25 October 1987
“Words do their job but what I’m doing here says a lot more.” Andy Goldsworth
This piece really spoke to me. I was first drawn into the black center and then my eyes moved to the yellow and the ombre that fades into orange and red. I think this is my favorite piece because of how balanced it is. You can cut it in half anyway (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) and it would be balanced. This work uses shape, combining oval leaves into a unified circle shape. As mentioned before this piece also uses color to catch your attention and also lead your eye. First, it is to the stark black, and then your eyes move to the brightest thing the yellow inner ring, then orange middle ring, red outer ring, then the brown background. The ombre color really gives emphasis to the stark black middle. It is the darkest value of the photo and surrounding that is the brightest color of the photo. There is also repetition of this photo, it takes many leaves to create the circle and make it full. This gives a sense of unity, all of these leaves are perfectly positioned because and they feel like they are where they need to be based on color. There is not one leaf that is not properly placed, and that is the beauty of this work.
