Issues - I'm not sure how to use layers well. Is the first layer the layer shows on top?
Goals - I hope to learn more tools in Illustrator and be comfortable using it.

I agree with Emily, and I think maybe you can use the direct selection tool to drag each object together so there's no gap between them.
