Issues - I'm not sure how to use layers well. Is the first layer the layer shows on top?

I agree with Emily, and I think maybe you can use the direct selection tool to drag each object together so there's no gap between them.
You trace out each object clearly and choose the colors accurately. I think maybe you can pay more attention on details such as the connect part between two objects.
